Deutsche Bundesbahn City-Bahn Push-Pull Train
Class 218 Diesel Locomotive with City-Bahn Coaches and BDnrzf 784.1 Control Car – Era IV
Prototype
This train set represents a classic Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) City-Bahn push-pull consist as operated on the Cologne–Gummersbach route. The centerpiece is the Class 218 diesel locomotive, road number 218 140-2, finished in the distinctive pure orange and pebble gray City-Bahn livery, in operating condition from 1985/1986 onward.
The passenger consist includes “Silberling” type n-coaches, a hallmark of DB regional services, together with a BDnrzf 784.1 control car. The control car features the Karlsruhe-style cab end, a luggage compartment, and 2nd-class accommodation, enabling true push-pull operation without turning the locomotive.
The full prototype formation consists of:
- BDnrzf 784.1 control car, 2nd class, with luggage compartment
- Two Bnrzb 778.1 passenger coaches, 2nd class
- One ABnrzb 772.2 passenger coach, 1st/2nd class, with cafeteria compartment
- Class 218 diesel locomotive, DB
All vehicles wear the pure orange/light gray City-Bahn paint scheme, as used from 1986 onward, with printed route destination signs for Cologne–Gummersbach.
Model – Locomotive
The Class 218 model is equipped with a digital decoder and extensive sound functions, delivering highly realistic operation. A controlled high-efficiency motor with centrally mounted flywheel drives all four axles, supported by traction tires for excellent hauling capability.
Lighting features include:
- Directional triple headlights and two red marker lights
- Digitally switchable lighting functions
- Independently switchable headlights on locomotive ends 1 and 2
- Double-A headlight function
- Digitally switchable cab lighting, changing with direction of travel
- Digitally switchable engine room lighting
All lighting is provided by maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs, supported by an energy storage system for uninterrupted operation.
Both the locomotive chassis and body are made of metal, ensuring smooth running and high tractive effort. Fine detailing includes metal grab irons, NEM-standard buffer height, kinematically guided close couplings, and separately included brake hoses and screw couplings.
Length over buffers: 18.9 cm
Model – Control Car (BDnrzf 784.1)
The BDnrzf 784.1 control car faithfully reproduces the Karlsruhe-style cab and luggage compartment of the prototype. It features:
- Type-specific undercarriage detailing
- Bogies with disc brakes
- Separately applied grab irons at the car ends
A built-in function decoder allows digital control of:
- Switching between triple headlights and two red marker lights
- Cab lighting
- Passenger compartment lighting
- Luggage compartment lighting
Lighting is provided by maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs, with a buffer capacitor to bridge short-term power interruptions.
Model – Passenger Coaches
The City-Bahn passenger coaches are reproduced with type-specific underbody details and disc-brake trucks. All cars feature:
- Factory-installed LED interior lighting
- Buffer capacitors to bridge short unpowered track sections
