We are leaving Chicago late afternoon on our non-stop flight to Frankfurt. Cocktails and dinner will be served en route.
One hour before landing they will serve breakfast. After checking through immigration and customs you will board a train to Heidelberg. After checking into the hotel, rest of the afternoon is free for your own activities. We will meet for dinner at 7:30 and to welcome everybody. After that most of you will call it a night.
We are taking the train to Darmstadt. The Railroad Museum Kranichstein has one of the biggest steam locomotive exhibits in Germany.
Today, the train will bring us to Göppingen, home of Märklin. First, we will visit the Märklin Museum and around two o’clock transfer to the factory. We will have an exclusive guided tour and get explained all the processes a model has to go through from the drawing board to the finished locomotive.
We are on our way to Stuttgart. The easiest sightseeing is the Hop-on Hop-off bus, which will bring us to all the attractions the city has to offer. I definitely would recommend the Mercedes Museum, were we can spend a few hours. Also, an excursion up the TV-tower will be a highlight. On the way back to the train station we will see a fantastic model train layout called Miniaturwelten, depicting Stuttgart and its surroundings.
Heidelberg, one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. So, while are staying here we should explore this gem. We’ll have professional guide showing us his (her?) city. This will include the castle, the old bridge, the old town, the student jail and some of the churches. After the tour, you might like to take the funicular to have a look from the above.
Today, we say goodbye to Heidelberg. We are taking a train to Dortmund. I picked the scenic route which will bring us there without any transfers. We will travel from Heidelberg, via Mannheim, Mainz, Koblenz, Bonn to Cologne (so along the Rhine) and from there to Solingen, Wuppertal to Dortmund. The rest of the day is for your own leisure. Maybe you want to do some shopping or just rest.
This is the reason, we came to Dortmund, the Intermodellbau 2023 to world’s largest trade show for model-making and model sport. INTERMODELLBAU 2023 will welcome numerous local and international exhibitors in eight halls featuring aircraft and RC vehicles, cardboard models, dioramas, etc. A wide range of offerings, extending from traditional HO model railways to state-of-the-art 3D printers, will be displayed at the exhibition venue for visitors to discover and test on-site.
Like all good things, this trip will come to an end today. After an early breakfast we’ll check out and take the train back to Frankfurt Airport. From there you can fly home.
