To ensure the operation of the new Talgo III trains and to extend the Talgo network to further provincial capitals, RENFE decided to procure its own series of diesel locomotives. Together with TALGO, the choice fell on the German DB V 200 locomotive. Krauss-Maffei adapted its dimensions and technology to the smaller Spanish loading gauge and the low height of the Talgo trains. Among other things, the steam boiler for train heating was omitted.
The result was a very powerful, fast, and maneuverable 2,000 hp locomotive that met RENFE's requirements. Ten locomotives were ordered: five from Krauss-Maffei in Germany and five from Babcock.
