    Information about the model

    The Class 01.10 locomotives, in their final configuration, are undoubtedly among the most famous German locomotive classes. Their service in the Emsland region until May 31, 1975, and the concurrent end of steam-hauled express trains in West Germany, contributed significantly to their cult status, even beyond Germany's borders. This success was largely due to the further development of the Class 01 into a 150 km/h three-cylinder express locomotive. Reflecting the spirit of the times, these locomotives, featuring streamlined fairings, were delivered to the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German State Railway) by Berliner Maschinenbau AG vorm. Schwartzkopff in 1939/40 and designated Class 01.10. However, due to the war, only 55 of the 204 ordered locomotives were delivered, 54 of which went to the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway). The young locomotives, some of which were in a dilapidated state after the war, underwent an initial, fundamental overhaul. This involved removing the streamlined casings and replacing them with standard boiler casings. The maximum speed was reduced to 140 km/h. Shortly thereafter, however, problems arose with the boiler steel St47k, which proved to be insufficiently resistant to aging. Since the locomotives were urgently needed for DB's express train services, the development of a fully welded replacement boiler was initiated as early as 1952. Just one year later, the 01.10 series locomotives were impressively equipped with new high-performance boilers featuring feedwater heaters. In the following years, numerous further improvements were implemented, primarily aimed at increasing efficiency and performance for more reliable operation. The most noticeable external modifications were undoubtedly the conversion of the connecting rod bearings to roller bearings and the installation of oil-fired main firing in 34 of the 54 locomotives. The German Federal Railway (DB) gradually and deliberately concentrated the locomotives at the Bebra, Kassel, and Osnabrück depots to handle the demanding traffic on the north-south line and the main line with the Class 01.10 locomotives. With the progressive electrification of these lines, the final chapter of their operational history began with their relocation to Hamburg-Altona and Rheine in the late 1960s. These locomotives were now designated as Class 011 (coal-fired) and 012 (oil-fired). Express train service with steam locomotives on the Marsh Railway to Sylt and finally on the Emsland line ended on September 30, 1972, and May 31, 1975, respectively. As early as December 6, 1975, locomotive 012 066-7 was back under steam as a museum locomotive, making it one of only ten locomotives preserved in museums to this day. The coal-fired Class 01.10 locomotives of the Kassel depot were regularly used on the Main-Weser Railway in 1962. Unlike the oil-fired locomotives, the coal-fired locomotives retained their tall, single-piece chimney for a very long time. Locomotive 01 1098 represents this configuration.
