Prototype: The international railway association UIC incorporated two refrigerated cars in its proposals for standardised car construction types. The Standard 1 (St. 1) has today become the most common refrigerated car. Of the more than 6,500 refrigerated cars which were built, the largest number, 3,500, belong to FS Italia. Even after these cars had long been put out of service by the other railway organisations, they were still transporting fruit, vegetables and flowers over the Alps to cooler Central Europe under the Italian flag. Some were in use on Sicily and were identified accordingly. Many private companies such as breweries also purchased St.1 refrigerated cars.
