After the 1950s, the German Federal Republic had an economic upswing and the most important, private basic needs had been covered, many West Germans had a desire to travel into the distance. Even before the big automobile ownership, therefore grew, the need for another series of modern passenger cars for long distance express service. Given the number of 1954 that entered service in new construction express car was no longer enough. From the beginning of the 1960s The DB therefore placed additional modern express train passenger cars into service. At this new family served the following Schnellzugwagen genera: A4üm-61, 1st class (later on 203), B4üm-63, 2nd class (later Bm 234) AB4üm-63, 1/2. Class (later ABm 225) BRbu4üm-61, half dining car, 2nd class (later RBbumh 282) and BD4üm-61, half baggage car, 2nd class (later BDms 273).

The designs for these largely followed the concept for the first postwar car types of 1953/54, but Drehfalttüren for the entrances. Externally, the sliding windows with bright gold oxidized lightweight metal frames attracted attention. The interiors experienced a series of changes in details. In addition, sliding doors were built into the end walls. The 1st class cars stood out with a cobalt blue paint scheme clearly from the 2nd class cars and baggage cars in their chrome oxide. This consists were among the typical Era III trains, which drove the now modestly prosperous "Economic Miracle children" in their best weeks of the year.
