The 212 series is considered a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the machine. Entered into service from 1962 to 1965 as the BR V 100.20, in contrast to the V 100.10, which was used in branch line service, it was also intended for main and steep line service.
Since an enlarged cooling system proved to be useful given the increased engine power compared to the V 100.10, the front stem and the frame cover plate of the locomotives from V 100 2022 were lengthened from 12,100 mm to 12,300 mm. The larger cooling system can be recognized by the vertical slats compared to the horizontal ones of the other series.
The locomotives were considered very robust and reliable; they achieved high, trouble-free mileage. The machines were widespread in almost all of Germany.
