The E 94 series was delivered by the "Allgemeine Elektrizitäts Gesellschaft" (AEG) in Berlin-Hennigsdorf to the then Deutsche Reichsbahn for use in front of heavy freight trains on the Brenner Pass. The acquisition of the new E 94 series electric locomotives was only made possible by their classification as a war-critical investment item. A total of 285 of the heavy six-axle locomotives were ordered, but only 145 were delivered by the end of the war. The machine was approved for 90 km/h, its hourly output was 3,240 kW, and its starting power was 3,900 kW.
