The E 94 series was delivered by the "Allgemeine Elektrizitäts Gesellschaft" (AEG) in Berlin Hennigsdorf to the then Deutsche Reichsbahn for use in front of heavy freight trains on the Brenner Pass. The acquisition of the new E 94 series electric locomotives was only made possible by their classification as a war-critical investment item. A total of 285 of the heavy six-axle locomotives were ordered, but only 145 were delivered by the end of the war. The machine was approved for 90 km/h, its hourly output was 3,240 kW, and its starting power was 3,900 kW.
