Elegance and power at high speed – the Class E 19
For the revolution of rail transport on the German Reichsbahn at the end of the 1930s, the Class E 19 was one of the fastest and most elegant electric locomotives of its time. For operation on the fully electrified Berlin – Halle (Saale) – Munich line, a top speed of 180 km/h was planned, with reserves for over 200 km/h. It was intended to still reach 60 km/h on the steep gradients of the Franconian Forest. With the decommissioning of the last locomotive, E 19 002, in 1978, its active service ended. Today, E 19 01 is preserved as an impressive testament to German electric locomotive history.
