As was customary for peak services, starting with the 1989-1990 winter timetable, the Intercity trains of the ETR 450 series also received a special name.
Following the example of the first non-stop
Milan-Rome services from 1988, which were informally
called “Mirò”, it was decided to
pay homage to the great masters of Italian painting: It began with Giotto, Botticelli and Guido Reni,
but later, also in reference to the cities served,
the selection of names was expanded to include many others. Representatives of culture, including Borromini, Brunelleschi, Tintoretto, and others. The only exception was the Rome-Bolzano connection, which was called "Adige". From August 1, 1993, second-class service was introduced on these ETR trains, which initially only had first class, with 5 carriages reserved for the lower class, without, however, changing the interior design.
