In eastern Germany, the Class 50 played a key role for longer than in the west. In terms of numbers, comparatively few locomotives remained in the Soviet occupation zone at the end of the war - 354.
Over time, different locomotive-tender combinations emerged. After their retirement, the new tenders of the 23.10 and 50.40 series were increasingly used behind the older 50 series. However, because they lacked a continuous rear wall, this combination was not particularly popular with the crew, especially in winter.
