The Prussian State Railway developed the P8 passenger locomotive to meet the increased demands of passenger and express train service. Over 3,700 examples of this versatile triple-coupled machine were built by German factories alone up to 1923. The steam locomotive, later designated Class 38 10-40, produced 880 kW, weighed approximately 130 tons including the tender and full stores, and was capable of speeds of 100 km/h forward and 50 km/h reverse. The repainting of the DRG's large locomotive fleet to the new standard black/red color scheme naturally took a long time. Accordingly, until around 1930, many locomotives were presented in the olive green/reddish brown/black color scheme that had been in use until 1926, but had already been re-signed.
