A large part of the Class 2143 fleet consisted of the third production series, which was further subdivided within this series. The so-called Series 3a comprised locomotives numbered 2143.34–43, and Series 3b comprised locomotives numbered 2143.44–70. All locomotives of the 3rd series shared some common features: the frame is straight and, unlike the first series, is not angled downwards. The areas around the cab doors had long rain gutters, and the door windows were framed in metal. The fuel filling areas were also redesigned with different dimensions.
Many locomotives were sold to private railway companies both domestically and abroad after being decommissioned. Some are now in museum operation or continue to provide reliable service in infrastructure projects.
