The Class 2143 locomotives were built from 1964 to 1977 and used on non-electrified main and branch lines, especially in eastern Austria. They hauled both passenger and freight trains. A total of 77 locomotives were delivered to the ÖBB by the Simmering-Graz-Pauker Works.
A large portion of the Class 2143 fleet consisted of the third production series, which was further subdivided within this series. The so-called Series 3a comprised locomotive numbers 2143.34–43, and Series 3b, numbers 2143.44–70. All locomotives of the 3rd series shared some common features: the frame was straight and, unlike the earlier series, not angled downwards. The areas around the cab doors had long rain gutters, and the door windows were framed in metal. The fuel filler openings were also dimensioned differently.
