The so-called diving goggles or spectacle snake were developed and built at CKD in Prague. The first prototypes of the T 478.3 diesel locomotive were built in 1968. The most significant change compared to the predecessor type T 478.1 was the replacement of the combustion engine, which had an output of 1,360 kW (T 478.1 - 1,104 kW). The locomotives owe their nickname to their striking appearance with the glare-free driver's cabs. A total of 408 units of this diesel-electric universal locomotive were built.
