The Italian State Railways (FS) purchased a total of 9 ALn 442/448 diesel trains from the Italian manufacturer Breda for high-quality passenger train traffic on diesel routes. Until 1972, they were mainly used as replacements for locomotive-covered TEE trains. In a specially installed on-board kitchen, food and drinks were prepared, which were served to the passengers directly to the seat due to a lack of restaurant area. After being deployed as TEE, the trains were used as express trains, especially in southern Italy. The ALn were very popular among passengers mainly due to the high level of comfort and a short travel time – the multiple units could travel 140 km/h.
