The German Federal Railway (DB) Class 217 was a more powerful development of the well-known V 160 family and represented an interim technical solution to meet a specific operational need: the operation of heavy push-pull trains with electric train heating on non-electrified lines.
A total of 15 locomotives were built by Krauss-Maffei between 1965 and 1968. These locomotives are considered the technical forerunners of the later Class 218, which was equipped with an integrated heating generator as standard. The locomotives were divided into the so-called prototypes (217 001–003) and pre-production locomotives (217 011–022).
