Based on the development of the VT 41 series diesel railcars, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) procured larger diesel railcars of the VT 42 series between 1935 and 1937. These vehicles had two 210 hp engines and were designed for a top speed of 110 km/h. After the war, the ÖBB operated the railcars under the new series designation 5042. Until its electrification, they were used on the Western Railway (Westbahn), where they operated, among other things, as express trains. Afterwards, their main area of operation shifted to Villach, Graz and Lienz, where at that time they were still used as express and semi-fast railcar trains.
