In order to accelerate the change of traction, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) from 1966 to 1975 from the Soviet Union procured a total of 378 locomotives of the V 200 series (later BR 120). Since the locomotives were missing a train heater ex works, they were mainly used in freight train traffic. Later, silencers were also supplemented to contain the noise level of the engines. Due to the loud engine noise, the name “Taigatrommel” quickly became popular for the locomotives.
