For the displacement of passenger and freight wagons in railway stations, Deutsche Bundesbahn relied on smaller displacement locomotives early on. A further development of the Köf 11, with power transmission via articulated shafts and additional axle transmission, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. Of this version, initially referred to as Köf 12, 251 shunting locomotives were delivered as a class of 333 to the Deutsche Bundesbahn. In order to enable personnel savings, a large part of the locomotives were equipped with radio remote control from the end of the 1980s. These locomotives were referred to as the 335 series.
