Rack railways exude a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountain scenery and daring routes, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The train moves forward by engaging a rack wheel in a rack in the middle of the track, as the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In the case of rack railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack sections depending on the gradient, the traction is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps there are a particularly large number of private rack railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
