The rapid modernization of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the commissioning of the first “Taurus” locomotive series 1016 in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also purchased for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 locomotives of the series 1116 had been put into service. They are approved for speeds of 230 km/h. Their power is 6,400 kW.
In 2008, RCA acquired the freight transport division of the Hungarian railway (MAV Cargo Rt.). Since then, Rail Cargo Hungaria has been a member of the Rail Cargo Group. Locomotives 1116 001–034, 048, and 049 have been assigned to it for traction in its operational area. The 1116 014 is equipped with the country package for Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
