Almost 200 locomotives of the E 44 series were put into service between 1932 and 1954. These four-axle bogie locomotives had a power output of approximately 2,200 kW and a top speed of 90 km/h. The locomotives proved their worth hauling both passenger and freight trains. Some locomotives were equipped with push-pull train control and thus used in suburban service in metropolitan areas.
The E 44 – from which the E 44.5, E 93, and E 94 series were further developed – can rightly be described as one of the most reliable and successful electric locomotives, as it helped the bogie design and axle-hung traction motor achieve their breakthrough.
