On the Rotterdam Maasvlakte – Dillingen Hütte ore route, where six-axle ore wagons with automatic center buffer couplers are also used, the four-axle, four-system electric locomotives of the 189 series have been operating for almost ten years, mostly in double traction. Since a different electrical system is used in the Netherlands, the desire arose to allow the heavy ore trains to pass through the German-Dutch border without changing locomotives.
