The two-cylinder engines of the 01 series are considered to be the first express locomotives that were built according to the standard construction program. The first batches were equipped with leading wheels with a diameter of 800 mm and were approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102 onwards, leading wheels of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, which meant that the maximum permitted speed could be increased to 130 km/h. The DR retained the original design with the large Wagner smoke deflectors and the air and feed pumps in the smoke chamber niches after the Second World War.
After the war, locomotive 01 226 remained with the Railway Company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn). After switching to an IT numbering plan, the machine was renumbered 01 2226-7 and was in service until 1973.
