The class 120 three-phase electric locomotives heralded a technological upheaval in the railway industry that originated in Germany. This made it possible to overcome the existing limitations of conventional electric locomotive construction.
The class 120 series locomotives were delivered from 1987 onwards. They differed from the pre-series models in a number of modifications (e.g. catenary, sandboxes and buffer beams). The locomotives were equally suitable for hauling fast passenger trains and heavy goods trains.
