As a successor to the legendary Crocodiles, the SBB procured a larger series of Ae 6/6 locomotives as universal locomotives for the Gotthard from 1952. Each locomotive featured the coat of arms of a canton, a cantonal capital or a larger Swiss city. They were, therefore, referred to as "Coat of arms locomotives".
